Located at the mouth of the Winooski River Winooski is part of the Burlington-South Burlington, VT Metropolitan Statistical Area. The word "winooski" comes from the language of the Abenaki Indian tribe, and means "this is where the wild onions grow".
Winooski was once a thriving mill town and is now in the midst of a major downtown redevelopment project.
Like many towns in Vermont, Winooski hosts a Farmers Market and also has community garden plots available at the OBrien Community Center Peace Garden. The Champlain Mill located in Downtown Winooski houses two history museums.
